Organising an exhibition is not something which can just be done on a whim. A great deal of planning and preparation must be undertaken to ensure that the event runs smoothly. Logistics account for a significant proportion of this planning, as exhibitions involve a great deal of infrastructure as well as the ability to accommodate the property of exhibitors. Below are some of the common problems associated with exhibition logistics.

Electrics - It is important to consider how you will relay electricity to the many stands around the exhibition area. It is likely that the majority of exhibitors will require electricity in order to operate computers and TVS etc.

Stands - Regardless of the size of your exhibition, you will need to source, move and position a large number of stands. This will need to consist of tables at the very least but, in all likelihood, you will want some form of separator between the different exhibitors. You also need to consider how you will get all of this equipment in and out of the building.

Plan of exhibitors - Once you have established how many exhibitors you will need to accommodate and the size of the tables/stand from which they will exhibit, you will need to draw up a plan to ensure that there is enough space to fit them all in and to ensure that people have enough space to walk amongst them.

Lighting - Does your venue have sufficient lighting? And if not, how will you fit temporary lights to bring the light up to the required level.

The Interior Design Show once again comes to Dublin and this time even bigger and better than ever before. Taking over Hall 1 in the RDS Exhibition Cntre, Dublin, the design Show this year runs from the 13th May through to and including the 16th (friday to Monday) 2011.

This does tend to attract a significant number of trades people and you can expect companies from around Europe to fly in to exhibit and to attend the show. The culture, character and general feel of Dublin ensures that it is one such City. Each year millions of people visit here, despite the bad weather, to enjoy the many features that the city has to offer. There are so many fabulous tourist attractions and places of interest around Dublin that it would be simply impossible to visit them all in one day, at least not if they are to be savoured properly.

If you only have one day in Dublin in which to cram all of your activities, there are certain places you should base them around. For example, a visit to the Guinness factory is a must for anybody who visits the city. It is not only about learning how the drink is made, the place is also steeped in history and tradition. Continuing on the theme of history, you should definitely visit the cathedral and castle which are located close to each other in the centre of the city. The castle is such an important place is Dublin’s history and a visit here will help you to understand so much of the country’s development, including the independence from Britain.

One of the most modern exhibition centres in the world, The Las Vegas Convention Centre as state of the art facilities to cater for any event that may be held there. With an impressive 3.2 million square foot capacity, the Convention Centre is located in the centre of the city, which with its host of hotels means visitors to the city have their pick of over 100,000 guest rooms.

The Convention Centre is operated by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA), who determine which trade shows and exhibitions get to use the centre's facilities. It has been fairly cold and windy the last few days here in Dublin but that has not dampened the atmosphere down here in the RDS Exhibition Centre in Ballsbridge Dublin. Everyone is getting set up today and prepared for the 2010 Rude Health exhibition and already it is possible to see what look like some interesting exhibits and stands.

Running from 11am through to 6 in the evening over Saturday and Sunday, the show in effect is one which is based on Wellness, Good Health, Fitness and healthy living. Expect for example to see companies who offer and train people in Kiniseology, massage and yoga , through to companies who offer herbal remedies and fitness planning. This is one of those shows which genuinely does seem to have something for everyone.

One part of the show which may be of particular interest to many people is the presentations programme. With over 20 presentations lined up, some of the more interesting titles on offer include:

The 'The Ultimate Girls Day Out' Exhibition

It's been quite hectic down here in the RDS (Royal Dublin Society) Exhibition halls today and there seems to be quite a good atmosphere around and I think the fact that many people have a bank holiday weekend to look forward to, has a lot to do with it. Down here at the RDS many of us unfortunately have to work the next 3 days but being here for the 'The Ultimate Girls Day Out' is great fun.

We are down here in Hall 1 and the show runs through until Sunday evening (6pm) and there is a lot going on and plenty to see. This is certainly a show aimed at women but plenty of men are down here with their partners although many of the men seem to have found their way to the bar whilst their partners enjoy everything from a:

Catwalk Show (which takes place at different times each day)
Pamper Zone
Make up area
Exhibitions area

This is really an excellent all encompassing show and if you are a group of ladies together, this is a great show at which to spend a full or half day: Although a show which is almost impossible to attend without spending something. It seems like only yesterday I was writing about the 2009 version of the Futura Fair and here we are again, only a matter of days away from the start of the 2010 show.

This years Futura Fair kicks off on Sunday 15th August and runs through to the 17th inclusive. Choosing an exhibition stand for a show in Ireland

The range of options for renting or buying an exhibition stand can vary greatly. Just the choice of whether to rent or buy can make a big difference financially although the decision is not simple. If you plan to exhibit annually or perhaps more often, buying a stand might be more cost effective long term.

There is also the consideration as to storage space if you buy a stand. The largest stands can take up space but with re-use it can certainly be worth it. The are many compact solutions in addition though for exhibiting at a trade fair, student fair, exhibition or conference.

Pop Up stands are popular with many exhibitors for small exhibitions and if storage space and transportation to and from events is a an issue. Pop up stands can come in a variety of design and styles and can be bought online.

Getting to the RDS exhibition centre in Dublin

The Royal Dublin Society Exhibiton Centre is perfectly located just on the outskirts of the city centre, in the Ballsbridge area of Dublin, within walking distance of the bars and restauarants. You may be wondering though, what the best way to get to the RDS exhibition centre is.

Airport: From the airport, your best bet (if you do not have a hired car) is to jump in a taxi or jump on the Aircoach. The Aircoach will drop you off right in the Ballsbridge area (an area with many hotels) and the trip will take you about 40 minutes although in peak times Dublin traffic can be bad, so be prepared for the trip to take 1 hour, just in case.

If you jump in a taxi the trip will be about 35 minutes and will probably cost you about 35 Euros. As a general rule I always ask the driver the generally price when starting the journey (I do this in every country to avoid any disagreements at the end of the journey).

Driving: If you are driving then the RDS has parking facilities and whether you drive from the airport or from another place in Ireland, just be sure to allow plenty of time to accommodate the city centre traffic jams which can sometimes be quite bad.

Some of our favourites:

Best Bar: Baily Bar Dublin (37 Dawson Street) - A very stylish bar which although not one of the traditional Irish pubs, this trendy venue is a relaxing and great place to have a quiet glass of wine to unwind after a full day at the exhibition venue.

Best Restaurant: Dunne & Crescenzi (16 South Frederick Street) - Some fantastic Italian food and although you can find cheaper places to eat in Dublin, this restaurant offers high quality food. Everything about Dunne & Crescenzi is outstanding and a place at which I eat on every visit to Dublin.

Best Attraction to see: It is not an easy choice between Dublin Castle and the Guinness Factory but if you are to see one attraction only, if you are short of time, then the Guinness Museum offers a genuine look at something truly Irish.

Road Expo Ireland 2010

The dates are now available for the Road Expo 2010 with the Irish show set to take place in Simmonscourt, RDS on the 13th and 14th October 2010. Without doubt it is quite a specialised show and attracts mostly industry visitors and exhibitors, i.e. those involved with the construction and road industries.

For those of you involved in some way with roads, then this is considered by many to be the top show of its kind in Ireland and this is a great opportunity to network and deal with so many different areas of the industry at one time. Expect to see companies from many areas present, including those involved with:

Below a look at upcoming entertainment in the RDS in the heart of Dublin, in the coming months.

Paul McCartney - Still performing live and on an international tour at present, the ex-Beatle performs in the RDS in the main arena on 12th June 2010. Tickets are still available and the easiest way to purchase a tickets is via Ticketmaster Ireland.

Dublin Horse Show - Over the course of 5 days, the elite of the equestrian world come to Ireland and the RDS is taken over with this popular event. A lot goes on at this event including many exhibits and stands (which many horse related products and services promoted), children's entertainment and plenty of different foods on sale. An exhibition dedicated to woman, 'Womans World 2010' is now but a week away and if you have the chance, I highly recommend trying to get a day or so to visit the RDS Exhibition Centre in Dublin on the 4th, 5th or 6th June for the show - especially if you are a woman.

This is one of those shows which you can visit and it is about relaxing and treating oneself, more so than going to do business deals and network. A lot of networking does take place but if you are a couple of friends just looking for something different to do for one weekend in Dublin, then Woman's World 2010 is certainly an option.

This years show is divided into 4 main areas - Beauty, Food & Drink, Fashion & Accessories, Health, Fitness and Well being. Within each of these zones there are a number of exhibitors; opportunities to sample and try different services and products; and a chance to meet experts and discuss issues such as health, relaxation and cuisine.

One area which is always very popular, or at least was the last 2 years when I was there, was the 'Pamper Zone'. Massages, various treatments and make-over opportunities were just a few things going on. This is a great show for just walking around and unwinding and if you register in advance the show is free. On the day the tickets are EUR12 thus it is worth visiting the official Womans World site to register.

It can be overwhelming when either organising an exhibition or an exhibition display, with so many things to consider and to take into account. Will the venue take care of the I.T. requirements including Internet access and visual displays. Where will the plug sockets be located? What about parking. What day is set-up? What about passes for entry for employees. How about the clothing the staff on the stand will wear and what about the exhibition stands and literature display stands. And this is just a few considerations of a hundred plus things one needs to consider overall.

Do not be overwhelmed though. There is help at hand from a variety of sources and provided you allow enough time for planning and to solve any issues, you can organise an effective display or exhibition.

Venue staff - In Ireland, a venue such as the RDS in Dublin have staff on hand who are there specifically to help the exhibition organisers and exhibitors. From experience, the RDS staff are excellent and for any big issues the staff are one excellent source of knowledge.

Renting or buying Exhibition Stands in Ireland

Choosing whether or nor to rent or buy an exhibition stand can be one of the first decisions if you are planning to exhibit at an exhibition in Ireland. There are pros and cons with both. Renting can mean the flexibility to choose a very different stand if you exhibit at another event and the initial lower budget needed. Buying your own exhibition stand on the other hand can mean the benefit of being able to re-use the stand time and time again and in the long term, to save a lot of money on stand rental.

One thing worth considering when thinking about whether to rent or buy can be the fact that you can buy a stand or display which enables you to have changeable graphics. Other factors also worth considering are if you want to use the stand outdoors (and thus might need a waterproof or wind standable stand); is the stand retractable or foldable (if this is important to you) and also what accessories come or do not come with the stand.

You might want to consider a package i.e. a shell scheme pack and this can mean that you have for example banner stands, literature stands and other items included. The choice can be overwhelming if you are new to the area and talking to someone who specialises in Exhibition Stands.

The Interior Design and Art Fair

It's only a week now until the 'Interior Design & Art Fair' in Dublin, but there is still time to purchase tickets for entry and to get involved as an exhibitor. The show this years runs from Thursday morning (13th May) through to Sunday 6pm (16th) and will once again bring together all of the key players in the Interior Design and Art field from Ireland and from further afield.

The Design and Art Fair is one of those shows whereby people within the trade will see many old friends also exhibiting at the event in addition to many competitors and ancillary services. The Fair is quite small (taking place in Hall 1 at Dublin's RDS Exhibition Centre) but it is very much a key event on the events calendar for the industry and is a wonderful event to network and gain visibility for ones service of design related product.

Two presentations will take place each day, with topics such as 'Value of Good Design in Antiques' and 'The Process of Interior Design'. Upcoming Events in Dublin: ICT Excellence Awards 2010

The annual ICT (Information, Computers and Technology) Excellence awards are once again coming here to Dublin, Ireland for 2010 and these awards play an important role in Business in Ireland. Ireland continues to have a proud and important role in the I.T. sector within Europe and with its relationship with the U.S. and the awards play a role in maintaining standards within the Irish computing industry.

This years awards take place in the Burlington Hotel (Leeson Street, Dublin) on May 20th and the event includes a Gala Dinner and the main awards ceremony. Many attendees also tend to stay in the hotel and use the event also for networking and meeting with other companies and players in the ICT industry. This is an excellent place to be seen and in addition to attending, you can nominate people for the awards, although for the 2010 awards entries are now closed.

Having attended the event a few years ago, I can say that the event is a relaxed affair and one which is many always is rewarding for those of us involved with the ICT field. (EYE) Early Years Education Show - Taking place on the 23rd and 24th April, this is a key annual show for those involved with nursery education. 1st Annual Allergy Fair - So many of us have been affected by an allergy at one time or another that this brand new fair seems like the type of show which could be extremely popular and serve a real purpose for most visitors to the show. Taking place in the RDS on the 28th - 30th May, the show will include access to a number of seminars, allergy tests and the chance to talk professionals.

Pet Expo 2010 - Between the 2nd and 4th July, the Pet Expo is a great event for the general public. The highlight of the show is the pet displays but also includes the chance to view the latest new pet accessories, services and clubs.

Many shows are more regional in theme and many have budgets which are lower and are more suited to a lower cost venue.

The Hub in Kilkenny is a venue which is perfectly suited to smaller exhibitions and which is perfect for more affordable and regional exhibitions. Exhibition organisers in the last few years have started to use the Hub more and more and now shows include the 'South-East Garden Show' and the 'Tuner Motor Show'.

One of the added benefits of this type of venue is the fact that the venue is close enough to airports such as Cork and Wateford airports, whilst free of many of the problems such as parking and traffic that exist in Dublin. I know from experience that getting time to actually see the city or place in which one is, as an exhibitor or exhibition organiser, is often hard. Every hour can literally be taken up in planning and working at the exhibition and there is often little chance to really enjoy and appreciate the place you are in.

A few years ago in fact, I achieved my lifetime dream by at last getting the chance to visit Hawaii. I was there to attend a medical exhibition and conference and I was there for 10 days. In those 10 days I got to see none of Hawaii except for the inside of the exhibition venue and the airport. I will have to visit again soon.

Seeing Dublin - If you do have the chance whilst in Dublin Ireland for an Exhibition, to see the city itself, there are several things I can recommend to see and do. My top 5:

Dublin Castle - located in the centre and thus easy to get to, this is a pleasant attraction to see. Try and allow 2 or 3 hours so that you can enjoy the castle in full.

Guinness Museum - Whether or not you like to drink Guinness, this drink is very much a part of Irish culture and the museum reflects this influence.

Natural History Museum - This museum gives a greater insight into Irish culture and has some interesting art and artifacts. If you see one museum in Dublin then this is perhaps the best.

Dublin Zoo - Many people really enjoy Dublin Zoo and simultaneously enjoy spending time in Phoenix Park in Dublin.

National Botanic Gardens - a walk around the botanic gardens can be very relaxing and a great way to unwind in the city. The botanic garden is worth a visit and quite decently priced to visit.

Specialists Medical Exhibitions in Ireland for 2010

There are literally hundreds of exhibitions, fairs and conferences which take place in Ireland each year and quite a variety, with everything from the House and Home, World Travel, Fitness and Health and Beauty covered. There are also though some excellent specialised events and one which I had the pleasure to attend last year, is BIOMEDICA. There are a few medical exhibitions in Ireland each year and a look at these below.

BioMedica - Taking place on the 27th and 28th April 2010 at the RDS Dublin, this is the only event of its kind in Ireland and it specialises in covering the future and standards of laboratory medicine. If you are in anyway involved with Laboratory Medicine then you may well already be aware of this event. If not then exhibition tickets can be purchased by calling Ireland 01677 5602. There are a number of presentations and talks and the latest technology and utilities will be on show.

MEDTEC Ireland is another important event for the medical industry in Ireland and this show takes place in the Radisson in Galway (22nd and 23rd September 2010). Part of a series of International events organised by DeviceLink, this event concentrates on Medical Devices and the manufacturing and design. The exhibitors in 2009 were quite a broad and interesting mix of companies and institutions including those concerned with :

The Energy Show 2010

Sustainable Living continues to increasingly gain interest and popularity in business and in people's domestic life's and the Energy Show 2010 is one show in Ireland which helps to satisfy this market and demand.

Taking place once again in the RDS Exhibition Centre in Dublin (on the 14th and 15th April) this show takes centre stage as it takes over the main hall in the venue. This years event includes a large exhibition section and a seminars area and if something is related to sustainable living then you will most likely see it represented in some form or another at this event.

Business Travellers in and to Dublin

Many of you who read this blog are involved with business and several of you I know are interested in Business travel facilities and accommodation. Travelling so much and needing to do business whilst on the go is the only way to keep on top of things sometimes. So to look at some of the options for business travellers in Dublin:

Dublin Airport Business Lounge - As an international airport and with many business travellers using the airport, the airport has a more than decent Business Lounge area and includes free Wi-Fi Internet access, newspapers and refreshments. The departures are also visible from within the lounge so you can stay in the lounge area for as long as possible.

Executive Cars - From the airport you can very easily use one of the many official taxis which are located directly outside the main terminal. Executive taxis in Dublin are one option though if you want to use a luxury car with driver.

Hotels - As with most major cities, there are several 4 and 5 star hotels and also some very good 3 star hotels in Dublin, If you are visiting the city for an exhibition or conference in the RDS Exhibition venue then the Ballsbridge area is an area where you can walk to the venue and also where many of the top hotels are located.

Airlines -Many of the short-haul flights from the UK are with low cost airlines such as Ryanair and Easyjet. For a greater chance of business class and first class seats, the national airlines such as Air France, British Airways and Aer Lingus are a better option.

Get ready for the Ideal Homes Exhibition at the RDS

Spring is close and that means its almost time for the Irish Ideal Homes Exhibition 2010. The show takes place twice a year and between the 16th and 18th April this show takes over the main Hall in Dublin's RDS (Royal Dublin Society) Exhibition Centre.

The Ideal Homes Exhibition is the the biggest event of its type in Ireland and this is a key show for many companies and can make a big difference to many businesses. The interesting thing about Homes shows is that when we talk about homes, there are simply so many fields and areas which tie in with this. Gardens, ecology, design, furniture and DIY for example are all sectors which connect in some way to the home.

Futura Fair 2010 starts this weekend (Trade Show)

The end of February is the time when the main Hall in the RDS Exhibition Centre welcomes the Futura Fair and this weekend the show is with us once again. Set for the this Sunday (28th Feb) and running through until Tuesday (2nd March) this show is a very popular event with the fashion industry in Ireland. The show has now been running for over 30 years and having started off with just a few exhibitors, this is now one of Europe's big fashion events. Although not spoken off in the same way as London or Paris fashion week, Futura Fair still attracts many of the leading companies and players in the industry and is an important event for those of you who work in fashion and media. It should be noted that this is a trade only event and admission is not accepted for the general public.
